New artworks in the collection – photographs by Laura Garbštienė
The Lewben Art Foundation has added to the collection three photographs by artist Laura Garbštienė from the series "What Should I Do So That the Unicorn Would Come And Lay It's Head on My Lap?". Laura Garbštienė was born in 1973 in Vilkija, Lithuania. She completed her MA studies in Textile Arts at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2000. From 2002 to 2005 she collaborated with artist Arturas Bumšteinas. In 2000 the artist was awarded Sleipnir Scholarship, in 2005 she received NIFCA Nordic AiR Scholarship, and in 2009 - Baltic Mobility Program Scholarship Kulturkontakt Nord. Garbštienė's work belongs to various collections both in Lithuania and abroad.
In Laura Garbštienė's work, the boundary between herself and the characters she creates dissolves - she becomes the object of her creative experiments. Through her artistic practice she looks at the possibilities of language, chance, emotional, subjective experiences. The artist does not limit herself in the sense that she is able to touch both the processes taking place in the periphery at the same time incorporating global factors in her practice. The artist's work also includes institutional criticism to which she looks with humour, the development of ecological themes and expresses critical outlook on consumerism.
