For his first solo show in Vilnius, entitled Skin & Shell, Kyiv-based artist Nikita Kadan (re)constructs the shelter, where the artificial environment merges with the living environment and forms it as a breathing living organism, with its new reconstructed organs, skin, and shell. Nikita Kadan here works as a forensic artist, organising a space with the objects that not only signify the workings of the catastrophe, but also act as ruins/shelters or even guns that have the agency to protect human skin and the skin of buildings.

Nikita Kadan (b. 1982, Kyiv) deals with current socio-political developments in his home country through drawings, paintings, and photography as well as objects, sculptures, and installations. He is a member of the artist group R.E.P. (Revolutionary Experimental Space) and co-founder of the curatorial and activist group Hudrada. In many of his works, Kadan uses architecture and urban landscape as a tool and a medium, reinterprets archival photographs as a means of capitalist appropriation of the past, and often uses oppressive visual language to highlight violence present both in capitalist and communist—and even in the “in-between”—regimes.

Nikita Kadan’s most recent solo shows were held in KKKC Klaipeda, Lithuania, and MSL Lodz, Poland. His upcoming personal exhibition Shelter II is planned to take place at Castello di Rivoli – Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Italy, opening on 14 March.

The exhibition will run until April 7.
