16th International Vilnius Painting Triennial “Nomadic Images”
On 24 November at 6 pm at the Museum of Applied Arts and Design (Arsenalo 3A, Vilnius) 16th International Vilnius Painting Triennial “Nomadic Images” will be opened. The Lewben Art Foundation is among the sponsors of the Triennial. Also, the painting by Jonas Jurcikas from the collection is included in the International Contemporary Painting exhibition curated by Linas Liandzbergis.
The idea of the 16th International Vilnius Painting Triennial "Nomadic Images" is based on a strategy of wandering in different territories, without priorities or a uniform plan, observing, comparing, evaluating, but not conquering. When travelling, combinations of seen objects and experiences form in an accidental and unregulated order, and bring back forgotten memories, which summon new combinations. This provision of the organisers is closely related to the wandering world vision articulated by the contemporary thinkers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, in which reality is constantly changing, and is described using notions of the rhizome and the labyrinth. Nomadic space is understood as a decentralised expansion of territory, an arena for unprogrammed processes, accidents, spontaneity and incompleteness. In adapting these ideas to the field of contemporary painting, we can understand the forms of expression as a potential infinity that can take various configurations, grow freely, and develop in any direction. A conceptual approach towards the triennial’s content allows us to avoid a horizontal view of the field of painting, like an overview, and gives it an intellectual dynamic. Innovation in painting, and changes in the forms of representation, format and materials, are emphasised, together with connections with other media and other fields of art.
The 2016 Triennial consists of two separate but complementary parts, united by a shared concept.
The first part – International Contemporary Painting exhibition – the curated exhibition, where invited artists from Lithuania and other European countries are presented:

The works will be shown in a structure like a labyrinth, proposing infinite possible associative combinations and ways of seeing the European painting scene. The exhibition will show from 24 November to 31 December in the Museum of Applied Art and Design in Vilnius (Arsenalo 3A). It is curated by Linas Liandzbergis.
A satellite project of the curated exhibition is an exhibition of work by the Ukrainian painter Rustam Mirzoev "Almost Reality", which will be shown in the "Cechas Vilnius" gallery (Vytenio 6, Vilnius) from 25 November to 31 December.
The second part of the Triennial – Lithuanian Contemporary Painting exhibition is an exhibition of work by Lithuanian artists. Seventy-three professional artists and art students entered the competition for this exhibition, submitting works created over the last three years. Twenty-nine were chosen by the competition jury, and they will be shown at the Kaunas Picture Gallery (K. Donelaičio 16, Kaunas) from 1 December to 31 December. Three artists will be awarded valuable prizes. The participants in the exhibition:
