Exhibition "Hello, Paris! The Path of Litvak Artists“ in Brussels

On Tuesday, 26 September, at 7 pm at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union (Rue Belliard 41–43, 1040 Brussels) the exhibition "Hello, Paris! The Path of Litvak Artists" will open. The exhibition is organised by the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union together with the Lewben Art Foundation and Lithuanian Culture Institute and presents four Litvaks, the famous representatives of École de Paris, from the collections of the Lewben Art Foundation and the Lithuanian Expatriate Art Foundation. Each artist has enriched and influenced the French Expressionism in his own way.

odalisque
Théo Tobiasse. Odalisque of the Grand Canal (oil on canvas, 89 x 116 cm). Collection of the Lewben Art Foundation.

Pinchus Krémègne (1890–1981) geometrised the amorphous forms that were infiltrating French Expressionism and supplemented a palette with Fauvist colours. Max Band’s (1900–1974) soft brushstroke and modest colour palette helped him convey Jewish sorrow and melancholy. Neemiya Arbit Blatas’ (1908–1999) skilfully conveyed psychological portraits, rhythmic compositions of figures, and sophisticated still lifes fascinate connoisseurs of painting. Théo Tobiasse’s (1927–2012) artworks are filled with Jewish mysticism, elements of adventure and eroticism, are enriched with metaphors, allusions and symbols. His works look like pieces of music, with underlying complex and multi-layered compositions, and resonant colour fantasies.
