Exhibition "Landscapes from the Collection of the Lewben Art Foundation“
On 23 March at 6 p.m. the exhibition “On the Road, at Home and in Dreams: Landscapes from the Collection of the Lewben Art Foundation“ will open at M. Žilinskas Art Gallery of M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum (Nepriklausomybės sq. 12, Kaunas).
The exhibition focuses on landscapes. According to the curator Ramutė Rachlevičiūtė, landscape is a favourite genre in Lithuanian art. In the interwar period all real painters did landscapes and portraits. This was where the aspirations of artists and viewers were in perfect harmony. Painted landscapes adorned private homes and outstanding artistic works eventually ended up in museum collections. "Not all artists were attracted by the allegoric, mythological or everyday genre, just like not every artist came to grips with figure compositions. It all led to a rather dubious situation where it seemed to be much easier to paint a landscape than to paint a figure. However, it must be admitted that an artist who was painting landscapes had to be both a talented painter and an exceptional landscapist" – says curator R. Rachlevičiūtė.
The exhibition presents more than 40 different artists. Among them are the painters of broad panoramic views, such as Mstislavas Dobužinskis and Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, as well as painters of urban and industrial landscapes such as Igoris Piekuras, Jonas Švažas and Kostas Dereškevičius, and finally, postmodern painters, such as Artūras Raila, Ugnius Gelguda and Linas Jusionis. Spectators will also have the opportunity to assess how differently artists perceive landscape genre because the exhibition includes photographs by Vitas Luckus as well as painting by Algis Griškevičius, Linas Leonas Katinas, Antanas Martinaitis, Vygantas Paukštė, Audrius Puipa, Algis Skačkauskas, Justinas Vienožinskis and many others.
